However, it can be challenging to find the financial room required to adequately care for a little pet of your own when you are working under a budget. Here are some of America's most well-known pet owners, listed from most expensive to least expensive, to help aspiring pet owners understand what they're getting into and perhaps point them toward a pet that suits their budget.

1. Dog

You might be surprised to learn that rabbits can be demanding pets. According to MyHouseRabbit.com, you should budget about $85 per month for the necessities for your bunnies, including bedding, hay, food, and fresh produce. With any animal, expensive health issues are likely to result from an improper or inadequate food, so you should take extra care when it comes to your rabbit. Sadly, medical treatment for rabbits can be more expensive than comparable care for dogs and cats.

As rabbits may be somewhat destructive (and are difficult to reason with), you'll also want to invest some time (and possibly money) on protecting your rabbit home.

Although they may seem low maintenance, cats typically cost $500 to $1,000 per year to maintain.

Cat owners typically spend the most on food and litter. And new furniture, I imagine, if your cat feels the need to engage in ad hoc vandalism (I'm not speaking from personal experience here...)
